Mini Corn Dog on a Stick 玉米热狗

For those exposed to the American culture, you would most probably know what a corn dog is. It is a popular carnival food in America. This corn dog is uniquely served on a stick which makes it super easy for people to savour this delicious batter-wrapped sausage even without a proper seating. There is no doubt it is a hit there. Why? Let's face it. The food is an indulgence, fill with fats and flavour and ever so convenient. What is more sinful than that?

Carnivals aside, you could also make this dish for your children for breakfast or as snacks. My guess would be they will help you polish off this dish in no time. If you want a healthier version, you could also bake these dogs. But the shape might not be as puffy and even.

This is my first time trying to make a mini corn dog on a stick. I am not thoroughly satisfied with the appearance but I have to give a thumbs up for the taste. It is an easy fix that sucessfully integrates the protein and the carb (the batter). Top it up with a side salad, you have a balanced dish. Yum!

Mini Corn Dog on a Stick 玉米热狗

Ingredients

1 cup plain flour
1 cup cornmeal
2 tbsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
2 tsp baking powder
1 egg
1 - 1 1/4 cup milk
8 sausages, cut into two equal size
skewers
enough oil for deep frying
a little flour for coating

Cooking Instruction

1. Boil or steam sausages until cook. Remove and cut into two.

2. Meanwhile, mix all the ingredients into a mixing bowl and stir until combined. Put one cup of milk first. If the batter is still too thick, add more milk gradually until you get that desired consistency. The batter should be very thick in order for it to coat the sausage (something like a pancake batter).

3. Pour enough oil into a pan to fully cover sausage later. Heat oil to medium heat.

4. Pour batter into a skinny tall glass for easy dipping later.

5. Skewer all the sausages and coat with flour. Shake off excess.

Making pancake with excess batter

6. Dip sausage into the batter until the whole sausage is submerged. Put sausage into hot oil. Fry corn dogs on medium heat until the batter is golden brown, turning frequently. Remove and drain. Serve with mustard or your choice of sauce. You could make a pancake out of the excess batter later (pix above).

Important Note:
If you are making this for little children, it is advisable to use wooden chopsticks or something that is not sharp at the end to prevent any accidents.
